Historians analyze how a government is created by examining the conditions that led up to its creation.
After the end of the American Revolution, the Americans needed to decide how the country and the government would look. They decided they wanted their form of government to be a republic.
Republic - form of government where people choose representatives to govern them.
Republicanism - idea that instead of a king, the people would rule. Government would obtain authority from citizens and be responsible to them.

Historians process the information they have by examining their notes (and the text) and experimenting with different ways to express their thinking.
The purpose of note-taking is not to just re-copy facts, but to record our learning. One way that you can ensure that you are really learning and understanding what you are reading is to take the time to process the notes that you have. One way that you can do this is by creating a “process” page.
A process page is a page of notes that you create that shows your understanding about a specific topic or text. A process page should contain the most important information, or the main ideas, about the topic. It should also include some visual aides and/or informational writing structures. Here are the basic steps to creating a process page:
- Read a text and figure out what the most important information in the text is.
- Choose a structure that would best show this information.
When you’re choosing a structure for your process page, there are a number that you can choose from (see chart and list below). The structure that you choose should make sense with the information/text that you are processing.
Below are some student samples of process pages:
And the rubric for the process page:
