7th grade humanities course overview
Welcome back to TYWLS of Astoria, ladies! I am very excited to begin the next school year and I am looking forward to working with you to make great progress in your literacy skills. This will prepare you for high school, college, and life beyond school! I will be collaborating with all of you in order for you to achieve the most success possible.
Our class will meet every day for two consecutive periods. During that time, you can expect to be practicing your reading skills for fiction and nonfiction texts, collaborating with your peers in book clubs and group projects, honing your writing skills, becoming knowledgeable about current events, and learning all about early American history.
Materials
These are the materials that you will need with you on a daily basis.
Assessment and Grading:
Your grade for this class will be derived from a variety of considerations: projects, essays, participation, performances, oral presentations, and traditional quizzes being among them. Throughout the school year, you will be provided multiple opportunities to demonstrate your level of mastery for each of the outcomes. However, you must be responsible for turning in your assignments by the deadline established in class.
Late Assignment Policy
If you are unable to submit a daily assignment (such as classwork or homework), you will have 2 days to submit it. If you miss a project deadline, you will have 5 days to submit the project. After this point, the assignment will NOT be accepted and it will be entered into JumpRope as missing.
Evidence Revision Policy
Once evidence is graded and handed back to you, you will have 7 days to revise and resubmit the evidence and rubric. If you did not adhere to the assignment deadlines (see paragraph above), you forfeit your opportunity to revise the assignment if necessary.
You can check your progress at any time using JumpRope. Login with the same information as you did last year. If you do not know this information yet, you will receive it soon from your advisor. The web address is: www.tinyurl.com/tywlsjumprope
ELA Test
In the spring, you must take the New York State English Language Arts Test. This exam is given over the course of three days and assesses learning standards in reading and writing. Our course of study will focus on enhancing these skills so that you will be prepared for the exam. In addition, you will be taking periodic assessments to gauge your skills and to measure your progress. We will use the information gathered from these assessments to cater to your individual needs.

- 2 composition notebooks
- 1 or more highlighters
- 2 or more pens
- At least 1 pencil
- 2 two-pocket folders
- 1 glue stick
- 1 pack of 6 Post-It notes (medium sized)
- 1 pack of looseleaf
- 1 mini-stapler
