nonfiction/informational writing

Nonfiction is usually written with specific text features.  Below is a list of some text features that are often used in nonfiction/informational writing:
  • Charts
  • Diagrams
  • Labels
  • Pictures
  • Captions
  • Headings & subheadings
  • Bullets
  • Font changes
  • White space
  • Layout
Nonfiction writers also consider text structure.  Text structure determines how information/ideas are organized.  The way a writer organizes a text is extremely important in helping readers understand what the author is attempting to communicate.

cookbooks/recipes

Cookbooks and recipes use very specific vocabulary when they are describing how giving directions about how to cook something.  Below are just a few examples:
