transition words
Transition words are words or phrases that are used to connect one idea to another. Authors use them to helps reader follow their progress from one significant idea to the next. Transition words also show the relationship between a main idea and the supporting details that an author provides.
There are many different types of transition words that do different things. Below are some examples that you could use in your essay. The ellipses (…) show where the rest of the sentence would go; this indicates whether you would use the transition word in the beginning, middle, or end of a sentence.
Addition transition words show that you are adding to, or giving more information about, an idea that was mentioned before.
