citing sources
When providing evidence in essays, good writers cite their evidence. When you cite something, it means that you quote direct lines either said or written by another person. You cite sources and evidence to give the writer credit for any words you use. It is also good practice to give credit to any paraphrased information you use too. Paraphrased information is when you put a writer’s ideas into your own words.

paraphrasing evidence
If you are just giving credit, but not directly citing (quoting) specific lines from the text, you can still use the sentence starters above. The only difference is that instead of writing the direct quote in the quotation marks, you would just write your paraphrased words instead. For example:
- According to Junior Scholastic, the tribes are dissatisfied with the way the government is looking into Indian land.
- The article “The Cherokee and the White Man” states that the female Cherokees no longer used bone awls for sewing after the Europeans arrived.
- Francisco de Xerxes, who was the secretary of Francisco Pizarro, said that the Governor sentenced the Native American king to death.
